Two preteen girls were shot in the head Saturday night in separate incidents on the city’s South Side, within a period of 30 minutes.
Authorities first responded to a report that an 11-year-old girl had been shot in the 6500 block of South King Drive in the Parkway Gardens neighborhood. The injury left her in "very critical'' condition, officials said.
The girl was sitting in a parked vehicle about 7:40 p.m. when someone fired shots, hitting her in the back of the head, police and fire officials said.
The child was taken to Comer Children's Hospital, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Curtis Hudson said.
Less than 30 minutes earlier, a 12-year-old girl was shot in the head while playing with friends in the city’s West Englewood neighborhood.
She was the unintended target in a shooting near the 1900 block of West 57th Street about 7:15 p.m., police said.
The girl was taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital. When police first reported the shooting, they mistakenly said the girl was a woman, between 35 and 40 years old, who was standing on the corner when she heard shots and felt pain.
Authorities are investigating the shootings.
