How's this for a 5 year old's show and tell?
TRENTON >> The teacher thought it was candy.
She was in for a rude awakening when she realized her 5-year-old kindergarten student had brought 30 packets of heroin to school Monday, officials said.
The 5-year-old boy, a student at the International Academy of Trenton on the 700 block of Bellevue Avenue, was playing with a white packet that his teacher thought was a candy wrapper, police spokesman Lt. Varn said.
The teacher told the student to put the packet away. When the student pulled it back out, the teacher confiscated it and realized it was a packet of heroin. She then looked in his lunchbox and found 29 more packets of the potent street drug which has led to countless overdose deaths across the nation.
The student was taken to Capital Health Medical Center in Hopewell, where he was tested and came back negative for opioids, Varn said. The boy is in good health, the police spokesman said.
Detectives from the criminal bureau are investigating to determine where the boy got the drugs. So far, no one has been charged.
Varn declined to say if the boy has been reunited with his parents or if he is in the custody of child welfare officials.
The spokesman also wouldn’t say whether police interviewed the boy’s parents.
